My Approach

Confucius once said,” If your plan is for one year, plant rice; if your plan is for ten years plant trees; if your plan is for one hundred years educate children.” Children hold the future in their heads and hearts and it is our responsibility as educators to stimulate growth and ensure safety. I became a counseling educator to “feed” the minds of children with knowledge and to fill their hearts with respect and equality. An ideal counselor provides a safe place to share ideas and beliefs and listens with fairness and respect. As a guide through life’s lessons, good or bad, an outstanding counseling educator capitalizes on all teaching moments, forever molding and shaping the citizens of tomorrow, while establishing that relationship with each and every student.

As a leader of the counseling program, it is my belief that the role of a school counselor is to infuse concepts of student advocacy, leadership, collaboration, and systemic change throughout the school counseling program.  It is also a professional school counselor’s role to lead the program design, to advocate, to role model, to guide, and to become involved in school reform. The counseling program design should promote each of the American School Counseling Association (ASCA) domains; academic, career, and social/emotional development of all students. Ultimately elementary, middle, and high school counselor’s work is to align with the school’s mission to support all students’ academic achievement while helping them prepare and cope with the ever-changing world they live in.

To align the school's mission with the counseling program it is important to collaborate. Both teachers . parents, and counselors have similar goals: the educational success of each student. It is important that I collaborate with teachers and administrators to promote student learning. If a student is having problems in a classroom, I hope to join together to come up with some practical strategies which will remove educational barriers and enhance the learning environment of that student. Studies have shown that children have greater academic achievement when their parents are involved in their education. Parental involvement is critical to helping a child be a successful student. Both parents and counselors can share information with each other to help meet the needs of the student. Additionally, I can help put parents in touch with community resources, if the need arises.
